Jianzhong Zhang of the Manuel Lujan Jr. Neutron Scattering Center (LANSCE-12) sets up an experiment in a toroidal anvil press, one of the high-pressure vessels Zhang and colleague Yusheng Zhao used to discover the glass formation in pure zirconium metal. The studied material was sitting at the center of the high-pressure cell (held with Dr. Zhang's hands), which can be set to conditions up to 100,000 times atmospheric pressure and to 1,500 degrees Kelvin
